It’s the most wonderful time of the year! School is out for vacation, families are getting together for the holidays, and snow is falling. This also means that Spotify is now releasing its Wrapped list of albums, songs, and artists of 2024, something users look forward to every year!
The streaming service collects each of their listeners’ most-streamed artists, songs, and more to create a list of their top streamed music and podcasts. After their first year in 2016, they decided to make it an annual tradition after receiving positive feedback from millions of listeners.
“My number one artist this year was Taylor Swift, and I really enjoy her music. She is one of my favorite singers and I thought it was great to have her as my top artist,” said sophomore Stavroula Ladopoulos.
In 2024, Spotify announced their most listened to artist was the one and only Taylor Swift, who also was nominated for five Grammy awards this year for her album The Tortured Poets Department. Swift announced her gratitude for all the support from her fans as she just wrapped up her almost-two-years-long The Eras Tour on Dec. 8.
“It’s just been such a wild ride and I appreciate everything you guys have done,” said Swift in her artist clip, thanking her fans for all of their support.
The most listened to song of the year was by a different singer, gaining popularity over the past year and is now on the world tour of her album Short n’ Sweet. Sabrina Carpenter’s song, “Espresso,” was the most listened to song of 2024.
“This year has been one of the most exciting and I thank you for all the love,” said Carpenter on social media this past month to thank all of her fans for their love and support over the years.
This year, Spotify added an A.I. podcast as a part of their Wrapped release. When a listener finds out their 2024 Wrapped playlist, an AI announcer will come on and talk about the different artists and podcasts they listened to throughout the year.
“My songs on my Spotify Wrapped reflected my emotions throughout the year, and it was so amazing to see how long I’ve listened to music overall! I am interested to see if I will listen to more music next year,” said sophomore Gabriel Jaffe.
Another thing Spotify introduced is a segment called “DJ: Wrapped,” where an AI DJ will talk about the listeners most listened to songs in order, as if you have your own private DJ playing a set list.
“My top artist was SZA and my top song was “All the Stars” by SZA and Kendrick Lamar. I was in the top 0.1% of listeners for that song. My second artist was Childish Gambino, who I love as well,” said freshman Rowan Danow.
Spotify Wrapped’s popularity has influenced other music companies, like Apple Music, to create a similar personal year-in-review for their listeners, called Apple Music Replay.
Inspired by Spotify Wrapped and Apple Music Replay, the A&E editors at The Schreiber Times editors created a combined “Schreiber Times Wrapped” of the past year, sharing our favorite songs, albums, movies, and more.
The Schreiber Times’ favorite movie of the year was Wicked, which was just released a few weeks ago and has already blown up! So many fans, including us, are anxiously waiting for the second act of the movie to come out, which was announced to release in Nov. 2025.
Our favorite television show of the year was Dancing with the Stars, which had the most watched, most voted on, and the most social-media-viral-season they have had in a very long time. 6.36 million viewers watched The Bachelor’s Joey Graziadei and pro dancer Jenna Johnson win the Mirrorball Trophy. The Secret of Us, by Gracie Abrams, was the editors’ favorite music album, and some of Abrams’ songs such as, “That’s so true,” “Risk,” and “Close to You” dominated the list of our editor’s favorite songs of this year. As for theatre, The Schreiber Times’ loved the Broadway musical The Outsiders, which won best musical at the 2024 Tony Awards.
By going back in time and watching their music trends over the past year, these music platforms find a way to interest their fans and get them excited for releases in the new year. Music connects people all over the world, and Schreiber students are no exception. From music to podcasts to TV shows to movies, Schreiber students are avid consumers of media and love to talk about their favorites with their peers. Spotify Wrapped provides a moment for us to look back and connect over a love for something we all share: music.
